How to get your dog used to a nail trimmer
Getting your dog used to new things, such as nail trimming, is done through positive reinforcement—that is, using small treats. Proceed as follows:
- Place the nail trimmer on the floor in front of you with the power turned off, call your dog over, and reward the dog with treats as soon as it dares to come close. Repeat this enough times, possibly over several days, so that your dog gets used to the nail clipper.
- With the nail clipper turned off, touch it to your dog’s paw and immediately reward them with a treat. Continue this until the dog no longer fears the nail clipper.
- Turn on the nail clipper and place it on the floor in front of you, call your dog over, and continue giving treats until the dog gets used to the sound of the device being on.
- Once you’ve gone through the steps above and your dog is used to the device and its sound, you can gradually start testing the nail clipper on your dog’s nails, while continuing to reward your dog.
